Thinking of having a wine-tasting party for a special occasion such as a birthday or a hen party?
At Mimi’s Organic wines we believe that the point of a wine-tasting party is first and foremost to entertain. We help you do it by delivering an experience that will enable the guests and the hosts to find drinking wine a more enjoyable and engaging activity and to learn to appreciate it rather than just consume it. The tasting should be the enjoyable part; the getting tipsy just happens as a result ( it does not have to, we always bring spittoons of course!)
I designed the format of Mimi’s wine-tasting parties and although I am now WSET certified, I would never call myself a wine expert. I am a wine lover who loves to share her enthusiasm for wine. Too often, wine-tasting events can intimidate people and what I want is completely the opposite because, in my opinion, wine is something that should bring people together and that should be enjoyed.
I was an early wine-taster but a late-comer to formal wine education. My early wine-tasting experiences were informal because they happened at home with my dad who is of the opinion than learning how to appreciate wine is part of one’s education. My dad is very French!
When I set up my wine business, I felt I ought to get some formal wine qualifications. Not least because my dad had only exposed me to French wine and I needed to broaden my horizons. Some wine-tasting sessions can be (but aren’t’ always) very formal. Some can be a bit stuffy and full of jargon but that definitely isn’t how people would describe Mimi’s parties, that’s just not my style.
Mimi’s wine-tasting parties (apart from the DIY option) are all tailor-made. Some people just want fun, some people want stories, some people want a bit of a challenge. Some want all of these components in the same party.
Of course, in all of them we cover the basics: how to choose your glass, how to hold it, how to pour, look, swirl, smell and taste. Because all these things actually do matter if you want to get the most out of the wine. And believe it or not, learning about all the above can be made into games.
What happens after that depends on the style of party you want. If you want a bit of culture then you might want to hear where each wine has been made, discuss how it reflects its terroir, hear the story of the producers behind it.
If you want party games then that’s great! The blindfolded tastings and the “guess the aroma” games are always popular of course but what about some wine speed-dating so that we can find your perfect match? Hen parties can enjoy slightly more risqué games where wines are compared to men. Most of the games have a competition element to them, we even have score cards so that “winners” can be identified and rewarded at the end of the party!
People can get ahead of the competition by checking the wines on my social network posts prior to the party and do a bit of research on the type of wine we might bring (that’s not cheating, that’s being resourceful 😉 ! ). Some hosts specify which wines they want to taste at the party, others let me surprise them. It is also possible to request something completely different to what is on the website. One hen party organiser asked for all wines to be sparkling wines as she had called the party a “bubbles week-end” . The “how to open a bottle” starter activity was fun 🙂 !
